Hello, photography enthusiasts. As I look at this photo series, I can picture the early years of the last century, at the height of the sugar industry’s industrialization in Cuba. In this case, I’m referring to the construction of the first electric railroad to operate in this country. These photographs were taken at what used to be the home—now a museum—of the former owner of the town of Jersey. In its gardens stands a fascinating steam-powered road roller from that era—an era of iron and hard work. It’s incredible how well this machine has been preserved despite the tropical climate here; it has barely shown any signs of wear and tear.
Perhaps it’s due to the excellent quality of the equipment from those days, or maybe it’s because we’re in a country that’s been frozen in time for over 60 years—perhaps that has something to do with it as well. There’s a reason Cuba is nicknamed the “Rolling Museum.” Maybe things here are just used to lasting longer than expected—I imagine it’s out of necessity. I don’t know, maybe it’s just my imagination… haha. With these photos, I’d like to submit an entry for the #monomad daily challenge. See you later!
