We’ve been very busy these days—not exactly working or enjoying a vacation, but trying to live a normal life, or something close to it. Between power outages, no running water, and rising prices on all kinds of food, we’re pretty busy and kept on our toes every day. During one of those breaks from carrying water up to the fifth floor, I grabbed my camera as evening fell and took some photos from my window. I liked the results, even though the power lines sometimes ruined the shots.
These shots are nothing more than a snapshot of life in my neighborhood. With these photos, I want to enter the #monomad daily challenge. When I see the long shadows cast by the elements in these photos, the eternal question comes back to my mind: How much longer will we be living in the shadows? I recently read a meme on Facebook that was both very funny and very disheartening. It went like this: “We Cubans who live in Cuba—when we reach the end of the road, will we see the light, or will they take it away from us too?” Perhaps only those who are living through this can truly understand it. Hola apasionados del blanco y negro y la fotografía toda. Por estos días hemos estado muy ocupados y no precisamente trabajando ni disfrutando de vacaciones, sino tratando de vivir una vida normal o algo que se le parezca. Entre apagones, falta de agua corriente y alza de precios en todo tipo de alimentos estamos bastante entretenidos y ocupados todos los días. En uno de esos descansos de cargar agua hasta el quinto piso agarré mi cámara al caer la tarde e hice algunas fotos desde mi ventana. Me gustó el resultado a pesar que los cables de electricidad a veces me desvirtuaban las imágenes. Éstas capturas no son más que un instante de la vida en mi barrio. Con estas tomas quiero hacer entrada al reto diario #monomad. Cuando veo las largas sombras que proyectan los elementos de estas fotografías regresa a mi cabeza la eterna pregunta: ¿cuánto tiempo más estaremos viviendo en la sombra? Hace poco leí un meme en el Face que causó mucha gracia y al mismo tiempo mucha desesperanza, decía así: Nosotros los cubanos que vivimos en Cuba cuando lleguemos al final del camino ¿veremos la luz o también nos la quitarán?
