Hello, friends of black-and-white photography and photography in general. I’m not particularly fond of photographing architecture or monumental sculpture—especially not when it involves politicians. I’ve passed by one of the busiest roundabouts in Havana’s Vedado neighborhood a thousand times, yet I’d never taken a photo of it. A couple of days ago, I stopped there and took a few shots that I found interesting. The contrasts between shapes and between figure and background were what captivated me most about these shots. Especially in the one where there’s a pedestal with figures on top, as if they were holding something that isn’t there.
That’s why I framed the shot with plenty of space left for the sky, as if something were missing in that area. The person being honored in this work is on that same pedestal but much lower down; he doesn’t appear in the image. It was a little experiment I wanted to try to give the composition a different meaning—nothing special, just my own little thing. There’s also a photo of a woman riding a small electric bike, which are all the rage on the island right now due to major transportation problems and other issues. I should point out that thanks to these bikes, many people—myself included—are able to get around without any trouble. I hope you enjoy this series of photos. Bye!

Hola amigos del blanco y negro y de la fotografía toda. No es de mi preferencia fotografiar arquitectura ni escultura monumental, y menos si trata sobre políticos. He pasado mil veces por una de las rotondas más transitadas de La Habana en el vedado capitalismo y jamás le había hecho una foto. Hace una par de días me detuve allí e hice algunas capturas que me parecieron interesantes. Los contrastes de formas y figura fondo fue lo que más me cautivó de estas tomas. Sobre todo en la que hay un pedestal con unas figuras en la parte superior como si estuvieran sosteniendo algo que no está ahí. Por ello fue que hice la imagen con bastante espacio al cielo como si faltara algo en esa zona. El homenajeado en esta obra está en ese mismo pedestal pero mucho más abajo, no aparece en la imagen. Fue un juego que quise hacer para otorgarle otro sentido al encuadre, nada, cosas mías. También hay una imagen donde una señora viaja en una pequeña bicicleta eléctrica que son una hemorragia ahora mismo en la isla gracias a los grandes problemas de transporte y de todo tipo. Debo aclarar que gracias a esas bicis muchas personas resuelven transportarse sin inconvenientes, dónde también me incluyo.
