I have been spending some time recently thinking of nihilism. It’s a pretty depressing outlook on life but reading others views on the matter has helped me form my own opinion. In order to understand this view I would like to present you with some facts first.
This world has existed for 4.54 billion years, 200 thousand years ago humans came into being and you reader, will on average exist for 60 years. There an estimated 7.442 billion people on this earth, you are only one.
The edge of our solar system 122 astronomical units (au) away from the our sun. There are 200 billion suns in the milky way galaxy which is 100,000 light years across. There are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the visible universe plus there is also the possibility that our own universe could be one of infinite universes that make up the multiverse. In a nutshell, space is REALLY big.
Does this create that empty feeling in your stomach? Are you starting to reflect on why we even exist? Now that you know how meaningless you are I want you to think about your family and friends, all the people surrounding you are only here on this planet for such a short time. Why not fill your limited time with as many memories as possible? Sure in the greater scheme of things you are insignificant but here and now your actions effect everybody around you. Once you truly realize how small you are, you will see the bigger picture.
Don't allow yourself an excuse to live a meaningless life. Life is short, yet it is the longest thing humans can experience. At the end of the day you owe it to yourself to strive for happiness and fulfillment. After reading this you could just continue about your day and forget what was written, or you could take it on board. I ask you, how are you spending your time? Could you use your life to make a difference?
I know I’ve probably been thinking about this too much but I wanted to share my thoughts regardless.
Time for me to find a new hobby.
