When people talk about legacy, it is easily mistaken for just money, assets, businesses, houses, achievements, positions that are held, etc. While all these things good, but one of the greatest legacies that someone can leave behind is the people they raise, support, and influence. Your family is one of your greatest legacies. No matter what you think you have, if your family is not benefiting from it, and if they do not feel the impact, then you are not fulfilling your responsibility. This is why it is very important to take care of your family. Trust me, they may not remember how much you have in your bank account, but how you made them feel, and your impact to them.

Taking care of your family is not just about providing food for them, paying their bills, or giving them shelter. But it is about building a home where everyone will feel that they are loved, cherished, valued, protected, and encouraged to become better versions of who they were. That is, a place where you can call home, where you have a sense of belonging. Trust me, a house is not what makes a home, but the people in it. When taking care of your family, you ensure that you create a home where everyone will always want to associate with. This will become your legacy that you leave behind you.
It is true that life can be challenging and demanding. There might even be times when it may look like work is choking you, or money may become tight in your pocket, or personal problems may be overwhelming you. In that moment, it may be easy to forget the people who depend on you. However, families are actually the reason why we keep moving even when challenges may come. You have to understand that families are not just around to celebrate your victories, but also to stand by you in failures and give you their support and encouragement. There are times in the past that, if not for a good family, I would not have pulled through certain situations. It is when you take care of your family that they will also do the same for you when you need them the most. Caring for your family should not be seen as a burden, rather it should be seen as an investment.
Every sacrifice you make today to your family will become a blessing for you tomorrow. For example, the long hours you work to give your children the opportunity which you did not have. The advice you give to your loved one can be what will prevent them from making regrettable mistakes. The encouragement you give to your sibling can help them to build the confidence needed for the pursuit of their dreams. Even the simple moments you spend with them can create a senses of belonging within them. Moments like gisting together, eating together, giving them listening ears, checking up on them, etc, can matter so much to them and create a lasting legacy.

It is worthy to note that taking care of family is not the responsibility of the parents alone. As a matter of fact, every member of the family has a duty to every other member. As an older sibling for example, you can guide the younger ones and show them the right path. As a younger one, you can show respect and appreciation to the older ones. Spouses can support each other. So you see, everyone has a specific duty and responsibility to play in a family. The most important thing is for your presence to be felt, and for impact to be created.
It is true that you may not be able to give your family everything that they may ever want. You may not have enough money for them. You may not even have a massive house. But you can give them something very valuable, something money cannot buy, your love, commitment, your presence, and your guidance. One day, people will forget the kind of car you drove, they will forget the money you had in your pocket, they may even forget the position you held. But your influence and impact on them will not be forgotten. They will remember you for being there for them when they needed you.
