I have had so many proud moments in my life, starting from the day I was able to solve complex problems as a teenager to the time I graduated from the University as an adult. Each accomplishment heightened how proud I was of myself and it gave me some level of hope that the future holds something better. I wouldn't bore you with my family's pedigree but just to know, I didn't grow up in a family that was financially stable. This means, we worked with our hands even as children to enjoy certain luxuries we wanted. I noticed how my mum had struggled to train me through my national diploma programme and I promised myself to train myself through higher national diploma without the assistance of anyone. At first it seemed impossible for a young man who had nothing to do, and nothing to fall back to, I just had faith and didn't bother to be logical and scientific about it.
After my national diploma programme, I bought a form for a higher national diploma programme with the hope of sponsoring myself. It wasn't possible in the first few months after my admission. But within a few months, Like a miracle, I started making a good payout from the hive and I was able to make enough money to pay for my expenses. The joy is, I sponsored myself throughout the rest of the year, registered for the license examination, and settled everything that I needed to in school without seeking financial assistance. Oh! How proud I was, not just because I was able to sponsor myself as I had wished but that I was beginning to take responsibility and control of my life.
I wasn't the only one who was proud of me, my mum was also proud of me. There's this pride I feel each time she talks about how I was able to relieve her of the stress by sponsoring myself. Oh! That one gesture had made me independent ever since and I never forgot about it. When people talk about how they struggled to sponsor themselves in school, I always feel proud to share my story.
