Again another walk, this time one from another moment and which in turn takes us to another old time... also under the light of streetlights on a winter night. Moments that evoke Christmas days and that revive memories of that small town in northern Italy, so peculiar, historic and full of precious details.
So we continue again in a #WednesdayWalk thanks to @tattoodjay but this time under the moonlight and in another place and time. And it's cold out there...
This is Bassano del Grappa, it is a small town near the mountain, in northern Italy, in the Veneto region, not too far from Padova or Venice. But it is a charming and almost magical place, but also dotted with the tragedy of history, of wars, and of all the fallen soldiers that are remembered there...
But it is night when we arrive because the days in December are very short. We can hardly see anything, the photographs with these cameras do not turn out as well as we would like. It gets dark and darker and the city becomes more special in these Christmas days.
Its covered wooden bridge stands out, although it is difficult to appreciate it, on another sunnier trip perhaps, the bridge (Ponte degli Alpini or Ponte Vecchio / Alpine Bridge or Old Bridge) over the Brenta River that is trapped between the facades of now charming restaurants where you can warm up and eat something, and also drink the most famous transparent brandy here, the grappa. Hence the name of the city.
We walk through its cobbled streets, surprised by the crowd that crowds into some shops that sell wonderful bright lamps and other decorations made of shiny crystals that seem to come out of fairy tales, in fact, if we look closely at some facades, they are de facto, from a fairy tale... there is the Italian Pinocchio.
Each corner and wall is decorated not with usual ornaments but with old tools, now "vintage" and some notes, between antique shop windows. And people are still there at the doors of shops and also bars. An ancient city, in which it seems that there is a lot of life.
We cross stately squares, where the Lion of Venice reminds us of history, to an older one, when the town belonged to the powerful Republic of Venice. And in all its locations stood the imposing symbol, a small statue of a lion, which you will be able to see in many more of these nearby cities.
And also nearby we arrive at the door of a museum different from others, it is not about the history of the city, but about its most famous element. The drink par excellence, a brandy called Grappa, and in this museum "Museo della Grappa" they explain in detail the entire process from harvesting to decanting in different and curious stills, not only made of copper but also made of glass. Because the glass, also important, does not let the famous Murano glass overshadow it.
Under the warm lights that barely illuminate those streets, so significant and full of charm, we realize that the entire city is a small museum at the foot of the mountains, crossed by a river and full of places and buildings with a lot of history. All this in a wintry atmosphere, the walk still is very pleasant, actually fascinating, which is warmed not only by the brandy but also by the distinctive, delicious and enchanting beauty of this cute Italian town called Bassano del Grappa.
Thanks for reading! Have an enchanted and charming day.
Merry Christmas!
