If you drive long enough and find yourself in the middle of nowhere... you might just find what you need. These images came from one of my favourite spots, a little fishing/hunting type lodge, called Rideouts, located on East Grand Lake in a little town known as Danforth, in the State of Maine. It's a small community that sees some tourism through the summer months thanks to a beautiful 26 mile lake that intersects the US/Canadian border. You can stay in one of Rideouts' rustic cabins, take a boat or kayak on the lake, go hunting at certain times a year with a guide, or fish if you got the right licenses. That, and swim all day, take in the warm weather and eat either at their dining hall or cook something for yourself in the little kitchen most cabins come with.
My family has been visiting the area for oh... 20 years or so. A great place to unwind, reflect, and listen to the loons. Then I tell the kids to settle down so I can listen to the actual wildlife as the waves from the lake ripple over the shoreline....
Many a diner has been eaten here, with lots of food and full seats. A place you need to book ahead, or you don't get to eat, or take home a piece of homemade pie.
Sunrise is a special treat on the lake. The coolness of the evening, more than not, brings out the misty fog as the sun rises above the tree line of the opposite shore. The smells of the lake brought on a cool breeze just makes the experience even better.
