Days have passed since the new Equalized Armor Ruleset arrived, and I wanted to talk about my experience and how I adapt to battles featuring it. However, ever since its release, I have encountered very few matches with Equalized Armor. Looking back through my battle history over the past several days, I've barely found any just a single match in the Frontier format. I was hoping to test it extensively across all formats to understand just how heavily it impacts each game mode, but in the end, I will focus entirely on that first experience in Frontier.

In the Frontier format, the Equalized Armor Ruleset feels like a major advantage for magic damage teams because there are very few units with Void or Void Armor to counter magic attacks. Since magic damage ignores armor entirely no matter how thick it is and goes straight for health pools, elements like Water and Death emerge as the biggest beneficiaries.

Battle Vs Cookiess

The match had a mana cap of 31, permitting 5 out of the 6 elements: Water, Earth, Life, Death, and Dragon, accompanied by 2 Rulesets:

  • High Five: You can summon a maximum of 5 units.
  • Equalized Armor: The initial Armor of all Units is equal to that of the Unit on either team with the highest base Armor.

Given these variables and knowing that leaning into magic damage is optimal, I built a team designed both to defend against that damage type and strike back with it, utilizing the Death element:

My Team | Mi Equipo

  • Thalgrimore: to reduce enemy health and make eliminations easier.
  • Nim Guard Captain: in the first position as a tank to try landing the first strike, and in case my opponent used Asel Alagosdil as a tank, to strip away its Divine Shield.
  • Grand Consul Minion: in the second position to steadily chip away at enemy armor or deal gradual damage.
  • Little Sister: in the third position to deal damage while scaling up its health, helping it endure longer once frontline units fall.
  • Sorrow Harvester: in the fourth and final position to deal heavy damage that bypasses armor, while facilitating enemy elimination by reducing overall team health.

Enemy Team | Equipo Enemigo

Enemy Team My opponent used a nearly identical strategy with one small tweak that created a massive gap in the match: swapping out Grand Consul Minion and its placement for Spellmonger.

Results | Resultados

This minor change made a huge difference. My Nim Guard Captain ended up with 1 extra strike compared to the enemy's, allowing it to hold out longer because the attacks from my Nim Guard Captain and Grand Consul Minion meant nothing at the start of the combat they were hitting a target that was going to be eliminated anyway by incoming magic attacks. Ultimately, this inefficiency cost me the victory.

Conclusion

This battle serves as an example that while the ruleset may not seem the most impactful on paper, it heavily alters how skirmishes play out even down to a minimal positional adjustment in team building. However, it's hard to notice these shifts when the ruleset appears so rarely. I hope that in the coming days I have better luck or that its appearance rate increases before the next season begins.

Because this season, despite introducing a brand-new Ruleset, fails to show any real meta shifts if it doesn't pop up frequently not even in a handful of matches making it feel far from refreshing. Of course, this might just be my own perspective and bad luck since I've barely rolled it in combat, so this is strictly my personal experience rather than global Splinterlands statistics.

Note: Right after writing this post, I started seeing the ruleset pop up much more often in the Frontier format, even back-to-back. But this is just a minor curiosity, as I still haven't played enough matches with it for it to represent a truly massive shift in overall ruleset frequencies.
