Each part of the flag stands for something. Fifty stars for the fifty states; thirteen stripes for the 13 British Colonies, which declared their independence on July 4th, 1776. Our flag is a symbol, a way to show the world what we stand for. It shows that we are connected to one another and that, yes, we are, indeed, on the same team. And because of all this, the flag is special, and it means so very much – and we should treat it with respect. God Bless America. — at Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Too easy to get caught up in reminders of the past and preparations for the future, forgetting what happens today. There will be no fireworks this year, but, we can still celebrate. There is much to be grateful for, despite where we stand today. I just thought I would be early in celebrating. We need to celebrate.
Happy Independence Day! (Almost!)

The complexion of the day is yet to make up its mind. The flowers dance, bending in the breeze. The gentle wind, waltzing precisely, right through the trees. I still see the heat being turned up. It should be a proverbial oven by 9am. Mazel Tov.
And yet, it is understood, there must be a flower. Always. To color my world. #alwaysaflower
And just like that, this show is over! Come back tomorrow and we'll do it again. Thank you for visiting my post 💖 As always; kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.
they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?
i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.
later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,
"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"
