The human eye can only distinguish objects larger than about 0.1 millimeter, about the size of a needle tip. Beyond this magnification, there is another world with its own physical laws and its own strange inhabitants. This microscopic world provides the building blocks for all life- providing oxygen, recycling dead matter, and playing an important role in carrying the sun's energy up the food chain. There are thousands of micro animals that have complex lives and relationships. My friend Darius and I collect water samples from local Boise ponds and record footage using DIC optics in order to see the true complexity of these transparent organisms. The most stunning feature is their anatomical intricacy.

When this video was shot, I was messing around with the microscope condenser until the field became purple. This water sample is full of green algae which can be seen swimming around the rotifer.

The rotifer is using its' corona of cilia to pull in food. The mastax (jaw) crushes the green algae on the way into the rotifers' stomach.

The final drawing is sci fi, as the rotifer now has a brain.
