A Bunch of Viewpoints

We're often being pulled around by the people that surround us. Sometimes it's the family, sometimes it's our friends, but most times, it's the ideas, feelings and thoughts that are locked up in our heads. And those, they keep dissolving into our reality like they're the real people that surround us, again, telling us what to do.

Who's really in charge? Who do YOU listen to?

I've been wanting to make a design from this little post-it drawing I made a few years ago. It had been hanging from the door of my room, and I've wanted to digitalize it ever since.

So I gave myself the chance two days ago and painted this little fella. And then I even made it into an animated GIF.

Concept

The idea was to have this little ball character who had a lot of other little balls on his head. The drawing I did back then had the little balls with dot eyes only, but to give it more character and feeling, and also support the concept of having different ideas/thoughts I placed little mouths on the head balls and eyebrows on the main character - but no mouth. This way, the main character expressed little emotion, but the little balls represented his emotions, thoughts and ideas - which as you can tell, he has many, but his neutral face makes him appear relaxed and secure - even with all the blurb in his mind.

Process

So first I made the outline. This time I wasn't going for a perfect and sharp line, so I used a brush that would give it a more "hand - made" look.

Next I painted the character and background and the thought balls. I used a soft-edged brush with different opacities to create the illusion of volume in the eyes, the ground, and the ball character. I also painted in some shadows and highlights.

I then started playing around with effects to give the character and background a wavy effect.

I then animated the waves by using this animation effect I learned a few days back. I like this a lot, it gives still images a very nice effect, as you can animate some parts in a loop while others stay still. It's created by making duplicates of the animated parts which are transformed in time (in this case, opacity and position), giving the illusion of movement. These animations are called Cinemagraphs.

I specially liked the smoke-like effect on the left side of the image.

Finally I applied noise and color filters to make the image more pleasing to the eye - eye candy anyone? 馃構
