Esto fue ayer: un niño que, asustado
se escondía y callaba. El miedo pudo
malograr su razón pero (lo dudo),
esto fue ayer. El niño se ha escapado
a solas y con furia de la infancia.
Cargó su luz como cualquier mortal.
Es inocente como el esquimal
con sus gélidas flores, su distancia.
Y le dicen que siga amaneciendo
las canas de su padre, una mujer
oscura y transparente. Lo estoy viendo
de susto en susto, sin retroceder.
Ese niño soy yo. Sigue escribiendo
palabras que tendrán que comprender.

XXVII
This was yesterday: a frightened child
who hid and stayed silent. Fear could
have ruined his reason but (I doubt it),
this was yesterday. The child has escaped
alone and furious from childhood.
He carried his light like any mortal.
He is innocent like the Eskimo
with his frozen flowers, his distance.
And they tell him to keep dawning
his father’s gray hairs, a woman
dark and transparent. I see him
from fright to fright, without retreat.
That child is me. He keeps writing
words they will have to understand.
