This past Saturday, I was able to make it over to Conquest Comics in Bayville, New Jersey, to attend my first Free Comic Book Day. You heard that right, this was my very first one. Something was always happening when this event was held in the past, so I was only able to pick up whatever issues were left over after the crowd had already rummaged through them. There were plenty of free issues to choose from. It is true that many of the free offerings are continued in other issues or contain a few short stories, but it doesn't take away from the fact that they are still fun to possess.
With a limit of eight books per person, I found five to my liking. As you can see pictured above, I chose Spider-Man / Venom, The Boys, The Avengers featuring The Hulk, Batman and Archie. The Boys issue is a chance for me to check out their story in graphic form, having enjoyed watching their series. This title isn't for the little kids. Speaking of kids, it might be cool one day to share these books with my grandchild (The Boys when he gets much older!). Of course, I would have to explain my necessity for keeping all titles bagged and in pristine condition.
The Archie title was an interesting find. Lately, I have been reminiscing about the books that I bought as a child, including Archie, Richie Rich and Hot Stuff. I don't know what made me think of these titles, but imagine my surprise to find an Archie comic. The style in which Archie and his gang are drawn stands out with beautiful clarity.
Even though I had just visited this retailer last week, there was no way I couldn't pick up a few titles for purchase while I was there. Rorschach, Fantastic Four and Thanos were selected as my additional pickups. If you have never visited Conquest Comics, Chris Blewitt and his staff are always very helpful in helping one achieve their graphic novel quest and then some.
