FATE

Temporary
like an icicle
on a sunny day
dripping away

Memories
fill each drop of water
fresh when good
salty when bad
the taste
tells the difference

Standing
on a mountain top
with arms outstretched
conquering the world
and stumble to find
the right word to say

Both
can occur between
the sandwich
known as the
dawn
and
dusk
of a single day

The time spent doing one task
takes away from another
if the task is unpleasant
it then raises a question of why?

Why complete something
that brings no joy
no happiness
no immediate rewards
for the time spent on such matters
may be our last

Our last moment
we are breathless
motionless
and
frightened

Incapable of thought
or action
simply witnessing
clips of our lives
pass by our eyes

The clips shown
compose
the fixed
deck of cards
that we unknowingly play
throughout our lifetime

This may or may not
be our final moment
for as each card is shown
the color is noted

We learn the rules to life’s game only
too late
and hopelessly watch him determine
our fate
