If we could travel back in time 100 years, we would find a very different world. In 1917, WWI was just beginning. The Germans were engaged in Uboat warfare. Socialists opposed conscription (the draft) in middle america. President Woodrow Wilson pushed the concept of the League of Nations.
It was the age of telegraphs. Computers were not yet invented. Handguns and trench warfare were the extent of military battles. Hot air balloons spied out troop movements. Life was somewhat primitive. A persons reputation mattered.
Between then and now we have made technological progress. We have lost much of the personal integrity that provided social stability.
In 1967 (50 years ago). Computers were still uncommon. PC's were still ten years away. Financial records were kept within paper ledgers. Honesty was still required by the people who maintained these books. Crooked bookeepers manipulated the numbers to deceive the public. Corruption within governments found this to be fertile ground. For all of my adult life, the world has slowly slipped into a pit of slimy corruption.
Today, we have the hope of blockchain technology to reintroduce honesty into the ledgers that record financial events. As blockchain based systems evolve the corruption will eventually die. Honesty should help prosperity to regain momentum.
