We sat around the table, and each one added a toothpick to the polystyrene disk in front of us. In the weeks before Easter, when we had dinner, we created a crown of thorns, where each stick represented something we had done that day, of which we were repentant and for which Christ had paid the penalty. So, night after night, we assimilated our guilt and our need for a Savior. And also, how Jesus delivered us by his death on the cross.

The crown of thorns that forced Jesus to be brought was part of a cruel game of the Roman soldiers before they crucified him. They also put a royal robe on him, and they gave him a stick like the scepter of a king that they later used to beat him. They mocked Him, calling Him King of the Jews, without realizing that their actions would be remembered thousands of years later. Jesus was not an ordinary king, he was the King of kings whose death, followed by his resurrection, gives us eternal life.

On Easter Sunday, we celebrated the gift of forgiveness and new life, replacing toothpicks with flowers. What joy we felt in knowing that God had erased our sins, and given us freedom and life forever with Him!
