Sometimes we’re happy and don’t even realize it. It’s a phrase that sounds like cheap comfort, but you only need to pause for a moment to see that it’s true. Happiness doesn’t always come with fanfare; often, it’s disguised as a tiring routine or just another ordinary afternoon.
Think about those days when you complain about the heat, work, or traffic. In the midst of the annoyance, someone calls you just to see how you’re doing. Or you get home and there’s something warm in the pot.
We’ve been taught that happiness is a destination: getting that degree, that promotion, that dream trip.
And yes, those moments exist and bring joy. But the most common kind of happiness—the kind that truly sustains life—is a quiet presence. I’d say it’s the absence of pain, the companionship, the laughter that escapes over something silly. It’s right there in the ordinary.
So today, before you go to sleep, we should pause for a moment and look around us. We might discover that, without realizing it, we were already happy. And that all we needed was to realize it.
