On weekends, I often find myself wandering around Taipei and discovering new things. One of the trends I've noticed is the increasing number of markets. I remember there used to be just a few regular locations with markets on weekends, but these days, there are so many more. A few creative parks, which have become quite popular, now regularly host markets, and you can even find them around train stations and university areas where they’ve gradually become a regular occurrence.

These markets vary in type—some are handmade markets where vendors showcase and sell their crafts, artwork, and creative products. There are also food markets offering all kinds of food and drinks, including street food and local specialties. For example, at the end of this month, there’s a burger market called Burger Carnival, running for just two days. It’s bringing together nearly 50 burger joints, including famous places from New York, international burgers, and popular Taipei brands, giving burger lovers a chance to indulge. Then there are farmers' markets, which don’t really interest me as much, but according to my friends from southern Taiwan, they often participate in these small farmers’ markets to promote local agricultural products. The market atmosphere helps boost their sales, so if they get the chance to sign up, they’re happy to join.

Songshan Cultural and Creative Park is one of Taipei’s well-known creative parks, attracting huge crowds, so it would actually be strange if there wasn’t a market there on weekends! The Shtaim Creative Market, which originally took place in the south, has recently expanded to the north. Besides the market itself, it often features live music. This time, the market had clothing, beauty products, handmade items, creative goods, and specialty foods. I saw something particularly interesting—a glowing painting. However, glowing paintings are only really visible in dark environments, creating a unique ambiance. With the right lighting, they can bring a painting to life, making them a pretty unique piece of indoor décor.

Even though I wanted to browse more of the stalls, the sweltering afternoon heat made me want to stay indoors with air conditioning instead. I imagine the vendors felt the same way. I ended up chatting with one of the vendors and found out that their stall rent was NT$1,500 per day. If they didn’t make that much in sales, they’d be losing money. But judging by the crowd, hitting their target didn’t seem too difficult. The drink vendors seemed to be doing especially well; with temperatures soaring past 35 degrees, people were flocking to cold drinks to cool off. On the other hand, the creative brands had plenty of people looking but not as many buying. In my opinion, only a few creative brands actually make money, while most are just holding on, relying on various subsidies to keep running.
