After dropping the children off at school, I usually spend about one to two hours wandering around a village on the city’s border—a short distance, roughly 4 to 6 kilometers away. I try to capture a few pictures; for me, photography is the best form of therapy—a way to shake off the exhaustion from my daily work at my own Sate (satay) restaurant.

About 25 years ago, this village was a "red zone"—a stronghold for the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) guerrillas. During the conflict, life for the residents was far from what it is today.

The rice paddies, which now flourish with lush, healthy crops, were a different story back then; people couldn't even tend to their fields—in fact, they could barely go about their daily lives at all.

Armed clashes between GAM and the military could erupt at any moment, and as a result, civilians heading to their farms were often stopped and searched by soldiers.

Today, I can freely enjoy the atmosphere in this village on the city’s edge, without a single worry. Although the locals can tell I’m an outsider when they see me holding a camera, they are quite friendly—allowing me to take photos and simply enjoy the experience.

In this Monomad Challenge contest, I want to invite my friends to see some of Black and White photos caught by my camera; "Walking around a village on the citi's border", the pictures presented to my friends in Black and white Community 😉
