After our eventful night at the Captains House Charlie and I set off determined to make it to Watersmeet a location we had only heard the sound of but never seen on previous visits to North Devon.

Because I'm an early riser, I generally take Charlie out before breakfast. Actually, it serves two purposes, it gives Charlie a chance to have a widdle and kills some time before a Full English is served. The signpost said: "Watersmeet 1戮 Miles" That should be doable. Charlie walks about two miles of morning back home. A few stops for a rest on the way, and we should make it. There were a few factors I failed to take into account in my plan.

A. There are steps along the way.
B. The path is winding and goes up and down.
C. You're walking along mountains, you Duffus, not the park.

Charlie set off with a big grin on his face, merrily sniffing everywhere and soaking up the sensory overload like some drug-crazed loon. The water gushing over the rocks gave us a false sense of security in our quest for the waterfall and the assessment of our capabilities.

The route takes you over this bridge. You walk along for a while and then back over another bridge. I was beginning to wonder if that mile and three quarters were "As the crow flies"? Because by now, it felt like we'd walked at least three-mile and Charlie was starting to look at me as if to say: "Where the hell are we going, dad?"

I was now starting to worry, I'm not exactly SAS material and was now puffing and wheezing myself onwards with the thought in the back of my mind: "We've gotta go all the way back yet!" we crossed this bridge, and a little further on I said to Charlie: "I think we'll make our way back mate." Charlie seemed relieved and promptly started heading back the way we came. Dogs are funny things. They do stuff that makes you believe they understand perfectly what you are saying when the truth of the matter sounds like. "mwa mmm hmhmwhaa whaa" to them. 馃ぃ Having said that, I think he knows what the word "Back" means.

Sadly, we never made it, but I plan to cheat next time. I'm gonna drive there instead! 馃ぃ
