A small town in the Midwest buzzes with activities. The birds are chirping. The wind blowing at the trees making their leaves rustles. In a distance, the voices of children can be heard singing happily.
A bell chimes indicating that the Cafe has a new visitor. The walls of the restaurant are painted a warm shade of yellow, the floor covered with a soft dark colored rug. The tables and chairs are made of a light wood and the chairs are cushioned with a beige fabric. The menu is displayed on a chalkboard behind the counter and features a variety of classic dishes including soups, salads, sandwiches, cookies, burgers and other comfort food. In addition a wide selection of drinks including coffee, teas, and specialty drinks lattes and cappuccinos.
The atmosphere gives the new occupant a warm,cozy and welcoming feeling.
CHARACTERS:
Melody: Melody is a dreamer, a romantic at heart. A petite woman in her mid twenties with an infectious smile bright enough to light up any room. Long dark wavy hair which she wears in a bun on days she feels fancy . She loves to express herself through art, painting, writing or making crafts.
Nathan: Nathan is Melody's boyfriend, older than her by five years. He is mostly seen in a tailored suit. The perfect attire to match his job, being an everyday lawyer. He is a bit of a charmer, never running out of words that brighten's Melody's smile.
Alberto: He is the cafe owner. An older man who also happens to be Nathan's god father. He is a man full of life with a pot belly, peppered grey hair, dwarf ears and multicolored eyes.
Valerie: A waitress in the cafe.
Doctor Kelvin: The Doctor that attends to the couple.
The play shows how love is a subsequent to the craziness of life and off course not without a cup of coffee.
Alberto: Nathan, there you are. We have everything set up.
Nathan: Are you sure everything is set?, I need today to go perfect.
Alberto:(smiling) Yes, yes I'm sure. It is going to be a good day. You're wearing your favorite suit. Besides what could go wrong on Valentine's day?
Nathan: (sighs in relief). Thank you Alberto. I couldn't have done any of this without you.
Alberto: Anything for my favorite God child.
Nathan: (rolls eyes) I'm your only God child. Melody should be here by now. Do you think she's not -
Nathan is cut short by the chiming of the entrance bell.
Melody: So sorry I'm late. I got held up by traffic.
Nathan: It's fine. Come, you must be starving Alberto promised us a feast.
Melody: (laughs) If he keeps feeding us like this we might not be able to pass through the door by the month's end.
The couple make their way to their usual table. A waitress soon approaches them.
Melody: Hey Valerie. We will have-
Valerie: A regular with extra milk, extra sugar and extra cream and as for Nathan, an Espresso.
She finishes with a mischievous smile on her face.
Melody: Oh and an-
Valerie: Apple pie
Melody:Why do I even bother?
Valerie walks off leaving the couple who instantly engage in small talk. A few minutes later, their coffee and pie arrive.
Silence follows the moments after. Melody sips her coffee while Nathan fidgets in his seat anticipating what was about to happen. He is interrupted from his thoughts when Melody starts choking.
Nathan: Mel, are you okay?
Melody:(talks through coughing fits): I think (coughs) there was something in the coff(coughs),coffee
Nathan: Oh no. Tell me you didn't swallow it.
Melody(confused): Swallow what?
Nathan: I asked Valerie to put a ring in your coffee. I was going to ask you to marry me.
Melody: Why would you do that??!!!!!!!!!!.OhmyGod. I swallowed a ring. I'm gonna die!!. My life is over. I knew I shouldn't have thrown that piece of paper on the floor. Now the Litter Police has come back to punish me.
She begins to pace round the Cafe.
Nathan:(runs a hand through his hair) Calm down. It's fine. We're going to go see a Doctor. Everything is going to be fine. I promise.
Melody turns to look at him, her eyes watering.
"You promise?"
"Yes I promise"
The next day the couple visits the hospital.
Doctor Kelvin: Well you are lucky I must say. The ring went through your intestines without any difficulty. You should pass it out in three to seven days. Just give your body time.
The Doctor leaves. The only thing that can be heard in the room is the clock ticking.
Nathan: Ouch that hurt.
Melody: I can't believe you made me swallow a ring.
Nathan: I didn't know you would swallow it. You were supposed to notice it after you had finished your coffee not swallow it.
Melody: Well excuse me not knowing there was a RING AT THE BOTTOM OF A CUP OF COFFEE!!!!!
Nathan laughs earning another punch.
Melody: Why didn't you have it put in the pie. No way I'd have missed it.
Nathan: I don't know. The coffee seemed perfect.
Melody smiles reminiscing.
Melody: What are you doing?
Nathan: (kneeling) I know things didn't go the way I wanted but I knew you were made for me right from the first moment I met you and you stole my cup of coffee after I had waited for it for over 30 minutes. I know you always wanted a Valentine day proposal. I'm sorry I couldn't make that happen but will you make me a complete man by saying you'll marry me?
Melody wipes an escaped tear from her face, nodding her head vigorously.
Nathan: I love you.
Melody: I love you too. But I love coffee more.
Melody runs out while Nathan chases her to get her to say she loves him more.
