The sun was shining and the birds were singing. It was a day one would describe as a perfect summer day. Unfortunately I wouldn't describe it as perfect, why?. It was the day before we both left for college. I had known Eliza for as long as I could remember. There isn't a point in my life when I don't remember her being there.
I closed my eyes and sighed sadly. I was really going to miss her. I got up from bed, packed some things into my little bag pack. We both decided to spend our last day together on the beach.
I came out of the shower to find three missed calls from her already. I dialed her back and she picked up on the first ring.
"Where were you!!!!!", her loud voice rang in my ear, "I called you like one hundred times already". I laughed, "Eliza it was just three times".
"Three to the small minded people and hundred to people that have unlocked their supernatural eyes".
There was no point arguing with her. She ended the call by telling me to hurry up.
I was really going to miss her.
Few hours later, I was walking along the beach with my best friend, finally enjoying the beauty of the day.
We stopped to watch the waves crashing against the shore. We talked about the little things. I've never been one to like the change. I always wondered why things couldn't just stay the way they were. Why did people have to grow and leave?.
"It's called life Tee-Tee".
I looked at her,"I didn't say anything"
"Yes I know but I can read your mind"
I didn't have the strength in me to argue that mind reading was not a real thing instead I admitted what had been bugging me,"I'm scared Liza. What if I'm not good enough?. What if it was a mistake and I can't change anything?"
"First of all you are going to be the baddest lawyer in town. You're going to give other children the fighting chance you never had. Secondly, okay I have no secondly". I laugh and she continued, "You've wanted to do this for as long as I can remember. I'm scared too. The possibility of facing this year without you is so terrifying but you know what makes it better?".
"What?"
"Knowing that you are one phone call away and when I'm down I have my person that I can cry about it to. I'm always going to be here even if it's not physically. I promise you". I smiled.
I looked up at the sky and noticed the sun was beginning to set. I suggested that we find a spot on the beach to watch the sunset. We walked along until we found the perfect spot.
We sat down and watched as the sky slowly changed from bright blue to orange and pink. We talked about how life would go. I would go to college and after a year when she was all cleared she would join me.
Then we would complete the remaining items on our bucket list.We would graduate together and then move to a new city together.
"This time it feels different, doesn't it?". I nodded because I understood what she was talking about. We had been to this beach over a thousand times but today just felt special. I wondered why.
"Promise me no matter what happens in life. We would always make out time to come here together and have special moments and even if for some reason I can't make it here. I'll always be here with you. Our souls are synched to place forever and always."
I placed my head on her shoulder, "Forever and always". We spent the night at the beach watching the stars.
The night was silent, the stars were twinkling in the sky, and the moonlight was casting its beautiful glow over the water. There was a special kind of peace in the air that night, one you would only feel when the world was at rest.
I picked up a stone at the shore and threw it into the water. The waves crashed. I smiled sadly.
"I graduate tomorrow Eliza. Your mum bought this hideous looking dress and I don't know how to tell her it's so ugly". I laughed, "You probably would have told her without sparing her feelings. It was always brutal honesty with you. Everytime I come here it takes me back to that day. If only I knew it was the last time I'd see you I never would have left. I should have figured it out but I didn't". I cleaned an escaped tear,"If you were here you probably would have hit me and told me to stop saying nonsense. I miss you so much Liz".
The wave crashed again, sending back the stone to my feet. Our souls are synched to this place, her voiced whispered in my head.
I closed my eyes, and whispered back, "Forever and always".
