Such an easy idea
Cut pieces of oblong shapes from your fabric off-cuts
Glue onto bag, leaving a space between each shape. Wood - paper glue also works. Alcholin adhesive is water based too.
Finish with some clear varnish for fabric.
I used a decoupage finish for a pliable natural look.
Leave to dry for a day or two.
