Morality is the war between good and evil. It is also, generally the group or network of beliefs, values, norms, orders, prohibitions, designs among others which are involved in the life of a person, group, people, social class, nation, or cultural environment in a certain historical period and which guide their actions.
The morality as seen in Save The African Womb reflect the human life in Africa. Africa is a continent, a non-human that has been attributed with a human physiological feature (womb) in the novel.
So the message of the novel becomes justified by the presence of the negative aspects of these features in the society such as immorality in place of morality, indecency in place of decency.
To expand the significance of the womb beyond the physiological, the novel states that “the prevalence of cases of abortion among young ones cannot be unconnected to the carelessness of the entire society”. The issue of abortion and carelessness is of interest. It substantiates the supposition of the novel that every action or inaction by any member of the ecosystem would have a multiplier effect on other members.
Abortion in this novel which is a physiological activity is connected to other aspects of social existence. The novel also connects the womb to the sociopolitical viewpoint, as such the novel create another kind of womb.
Womb is used as an ideological container in the novel. this is reflected thus, “The womb of a girl is like a gate to her nation or continent. Every great idea ever seen in the world today had passed through the womb of a girl somewhere, ideas rule the world”. “Do you know that destinies are formed in the womb? Yes! in your womb. It is the efficacy of your womb that will determine the future seeds of Africa. If great seeds must be born to save Africa from total collapse, then great seeds must be borne by saved and divine wombs”.
The novel from this point of view, presents an ideological or philosophical view of womb. Some of the statements may sound paradoxical. But, if great ideas and future reside in human beings, and every human being must pass through a womb, it then means that the great ideas and future also pass through the womb.
this means that when the abortion is done in the womb, it is not only the physical foetus that is terminated, rather the future and great ideas that ought to have matured with the foetus is also destroyed.
when Agnes lamented in the novel, It shows that there is a connection between the womb and the future, where the absence of one means the absence of the other. The absence of the physiological womb implicates the absence of future joy. This is why the novel describes the womb as the gate through which other positive values enter: “The womb of a girl is like a ‘gate’ to her nation or continent”.
Everyone in the text, apart from Ugomma whose end is not known, who did one wrongdoing or the other paid for it. Agnes paid for her promiscuous life by losing her womb, marriage and freedom. Dr Mitini paid for his greed by losing his medical license and freedom. The Abrahams who were so obsessed with their social image that they sold their grandchild paid for their crime by being exposed. Even Joseph suffered emotional and psychological trauma for raping Barakemi.
In the novel Oliver was so sexually loose that the only piece of advice he could give his friend was to rape Barakemi. This led to the raping of Barakemi by Joseph. And if Joseph had not raped Barakemi, the poor girl would not have gotten pregnant nor would Bishop and Mrs Abraham have sold their grandchild. Perhaps, Dr Mitini would not have found himself in the mess he got engulfed in. The Abrahams who portrayed themselves as holy meted out strict punishment to those whose children got pregnant out of wedlock but they did worse, they did not only suggest abortion, they even sold their grandchild. Joseph was also a hypocrite, he pretended to be a devout Christian but he was merely deceiving Barakemi.
In the novel Barakemi's child was stolen by the doctor who helped with the delivery and sold to Agnes to cover up her barrenness and to protect the social image of the Abrahams and was exposed by a nurse. This resulted in a mess for the doctor as the police and the public were made known about the child trafficking involvement by the doctor and the Bishop.
Davies loved Agnes despite knowing her ugly past proceeded to marry her.
also, Joseph loved Barakemi so much that he regretted raping her and was even ready to marry her as well. Joseph on his part is remorseful of his bad act. He wants to see Barakemi, at least, to apologize to her, but did not know where Barakemi had gone to.
At Lagos, Barakemi and her grandmother decided to involve the man that was responsible for her pregnancy. and this was how Joseph was contacted and he flies to Lagos and reunited with Barakemi, though without the knowledge of the latter’s parents.
Agnes, was arrested and jailed. While in jail, she is visited by a Christian group. She confesses the sins of her past and requests them to help her locate the child she abandoned at the gate of a pastor years back for her to apologize to the child. The group succeeded in doing so, and it becomes a revelation that almost ruins the life of the girl, however, this establishes a stronger bond between the couple and the girl.
Bishop and Mrs Abraham loved each other so much such that they did not let childlessness to be a problem in their marriage. rather they showed Barakemi such great love that she did not know that they were not her biological parents until the end of the story where Agnes made her confession about her mischievous act and narated the story on how she dump her baby (Barakemi) at the gate of the Rev.
