Fedora was berating herself all the way, for having accepted her brother Bernard's invitation to go to the house of her great-uncle Thomas, since he was never to her liking.
She had visited her great-uncle's house three times, only to spend the vacations, since her parents work in summer in a restaurant and could not leave them alone, for Fedora they were always the worst vacations of her life, she does not explain how Bernard saw it differently, perhaps for that reason he included it in his will.
As soon as they reached the hill, Fedora began to remember the cruel face of her great-uncle, who treated her with disdain, this made her feel uncomfortable, sometimes she feared that he would hurt her, like her servants whom she treated very badly.
On one occasion Fedora was playing hide and seek with the daughter of one of the maids, she decided to hide from her, entering a door that was semi-open in the kitchen, where she saw how her great-uncle beat one of his employees mercilessly with a whip, she automatically covered her mouth so that the scream she had inside would not escape her and betray her presence there.
When the brothers arrived, they were stunned by the terrifying aspect of the house, nothing was left of the splendor of the past that they remembered, and they could see that it had been abandoned for years. Bernard had to push aside the dry branches to get to the front door, while Fedora had stayed inside the car, she did not want to enter the house.
Bernard shouted at him from the entrance. - You're not coming, you're not going to let the ghosts get me, don't be a coward, come on.
"Why should I listen to my stupid brother?, ah, I hate it when he challenges me!" - Fedora thought aloud.
It was daylight but inside the house, everything was dark, the woman screamed at the sight of some mice that quickly passed in front of them, immediately, Bernard pulled his sister by the arm, he knew she would not take another step, they began to open the old and dusty curtains to let the light in, the interior of the house was as deteriorated and dismal as the exterior., Fedora began to feel uncomfortable, wanting to run away, but Bernard was holding her by the waist.
After touring the house, Fedora asked her brother - will you sell this house, I have a friend who owns a real estate company, he could help you.
_ Well, I don't think so, I've always liked this house very much. - answered Bernard.
_ It's crazy, where are you going to get the money to repair the damage it has, plus the mold there must be, I don't think they will let you live in that conditions.
_ Okay, well, I'll think about it, let me admire it for a while and remember when it was in its full glory, you remember.
_ Of course, I remember, by the way, Bernard, now that we are near the kitchen let's go to the room where I found the great-uncle beating that poor boy - said Fedora to her brother while she took him by the hand.
They tried to open the door, but it was sealed, and the worm of curiosity arose between them, suddenly Bernard remembered a window through which they could access that place. Both brothers walked through the undergrowth, the woman had to endure the scratches on her skin from the branches as they crossed the courtyard.
The brother had to search through the debris until he found the window, but it was closed, - there must be a way to break everything. - Bernard said.
Fedora got an iron bar, with which they managed to break the edges of the window, then they continued with other tools that they found in the surroundings until they opened it completely, what they discovered there made Bernard immediately desist from the idea of keeping the house.
****
Hours later, the house would be cordoned off by a group of police investigators, since a few bodies had been found in the closed area.
