Does a cannabis beer taste at all?

Some friends delivered this different tasting beer to one of our meetings some days ago. Sure, this sounds interesting and after a few days of waiting inside of my fridge, it was time for a testing session.

The sad story of Hemp

Before the THC-containing variants of hemp fell into disrepute, commercial hemp was a plant widely grown in Germany and around the world. The fibers were used in the manufacture of textiles as well as for ropes and cordage. Hemp oil was made from the seeds, and hemp was and is also used in the natural insulation of buildings.

For some time now, the useful and medicinal plant is now finding use again, inspiring not only medical professionals and builders, but also quite different industries: Breweries, for example. the Weissenohe monastery brewery is setting a good example and has recently added a mixed beer drink to its range that contains a portion of hemp oil in addition to the usual suspects. The Cannabis Club Sud is brewed with raw materials from organic cultivation: both the barley and the hops are subject to the strict specifications of Bioland, and the commercial hemp comes from organic farming. The good full-bodied beer from the Weissenohe monastery brewery is blended with essential hemp oil to give it its subtly bitter, slightly lemony taste.

The Cannabis Club Sud flows into the glass in a deep golden hue and is crowned by a good amount of airy, white foam. A subtle aroma of soft malt rises from the nearly clear beer, which combines with a strong bitter hop aroma and an unmistakable hemp note on the nose. The aftertaste follows on the heels of the aroma: Bready malt kicks things off before the hops take over with notes of green herbs, fresh citrus and delightful bitterness. The hemp oil gives the beer its very own character and that certain something.
