It is stupid cold outside

It is freezing outside and we have been having some snow flurries all day long. These little flakes are the perfect ones for taking pictures of though, so I grabbed my camera and flash and tried my hand at a form of photography I have never done before.

I have seen images of macro snowflakes and can deconstruct how they are done, but I don't really have the patience to try and collect flakes on a mirror or glass and move them around to the correct orientation for the right "pose" for what I wanted.

Another problem I would face is that I would have to set up the stuff beforehand and outside in my garage so everything can get cold enough so when the flakes land on it, they don't melt. It is a very delicate process.

I went with the whole "let the flakes fall wherever they feel like and take pictures of them right there" method. That way I could get used to the focusing with the extension tubes and the flash strength.

One thing I found pretty cool was how the light from the flash reflected a lot stronger off of some of the snowflakes than the other ones. I am assuming this is because there is a bit more moisture on them, but I am not a scientist, so I can't confirm that is the reason.

It was pretty fun taking this images and I hope that I can get out and take some more like this again. I am hoping to be able to set up everything needed to do more of a professional type of shoot of snowflakes.
