Sometimes I really have to "check myself" and have a closer look at my own strange beliefs... just in case I'm going over the edge into being too much of a nutjob.
It's a good exercise... at least I think it is.
I wonder if other people check themselves, as well... or do they just fly their "freak flags" with abandon?
Then again, it could be that I just need to stay off the Internet!
There are so many "unusual" beliefs on this planet, and a lot of people get very serious about them.
I'm not going to call out anyONE or anyTHING in particular... just keeping it general. Cowardice? Maybe... it's just that the more oddball it gets, typically the more fanatical people get about their agendas.
Covid, Aliens, New World Order, Conspiracies, Flat Earth, Vaccinations, Mass Genocide, End of the World, Poison in the food, chemtrails, poison in the water, the dangers of 5G, Q Anon, Hollow Earth...
I suppose the thing that scares me is that conjecture and opinion is not the same thing as documentable facts. Consistency of thought is clearly optional.
"So you you KNOW that you see faeries all the time, but believing in God makes a person crazy?"
At the end of the day, I find myself sitting sitting down and pondering exactly what is real, and what is just made up.
I remember an interesting discussion I had with a friend who's also a psychologist... about how we look at "insanity."
One of the interesting angles she took to point our how ambiguous many things are was the statement that she had little doubt that someone who keeps hearing some "message" coming from the moon might be nuts... but the problems arise when hundreds of unconnected people around the world are hearing the SAME message coming from the moon.
Collective delusion? Or something we just can't decipher, yet?
My own open-mindedness to the (as of yet not known) possibilities of the universe is what keeps me from "calling out" anyone offhand... instead, I tend to investigate until I am certain there's nothing but contradictory evidence.
Even so, one person's experience isn't necessarily another person's experience. Just ask a cop recording what happened in an accident from witnesses on four different street corners!
My skepticism comes simply from the fact that I have reached 60 years of age and have never experienced or seen any of these myriad unusual things in my life, no matter how hard I have tried, or looked.
"You just have to have faith!"
Yes... but you just finished telling me that you don't BELIEVE in things you're expected to take on faith?!?!
In the end, perhaps only the person having an experience actually experiences that experience!
Beats me... but I still think there's some pretty oddball stuff out there, much of which seems just pulled out of thin air... or off the pages of a tabloid!
