As I drove into town this afternoon to take a few packages to the post office, I noticed that some of our trees are finally starting to turn yellow, red and orange.
Whereas fall has been "in effect" for several weeks, it hasn't really been fall-like. Sure, it's gotten a little bit cooler in the mornings but we have still had what basically amounts to a late version of our typical summer weather: sunshine or light clouds, and rarely a breeze to stir things up. Last time I remember us having any significant rain was back in June.
When I got out of the car upon returning home I noticed that there was quite a wind blowing. I stood in it for a few minutes and just watched the trees sway and listened to the rustle of the leaves, realizing that it had been a really long time since I had last heard that sound... and then recognizing that these are the winds of change.
Of course, change can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. And I don't just mean the weather.
Seems like the whole world is changing in some way that feels more intense and abrupt than I can remember; seems like we're moving towards a time in which the prolonged financial boom in anything from banking to real estate to businesses increasingly standing on shaky ground.
The winds of change started blowing here at our household quite a few years ago, when we made the decision to no longer be part of "regular" life. No, we're not "survivalist preppers" living in an offgrid bunker, but we made a conscious decision to stop having "jobs" and instead focused solely on working for ourselves, doing the things that are important to us.
In and of itself, that's quite a change because it also represents a change of lifestyles, including the fact that we have —at least so far —more or less voluntarily embraced the idea that we're pretty poor financially speaking. On the other hand we are quite prosperous in other senses of the word.
Soon, the winds of change will blow into the life of our 30-year old daughter who is getting married to her longtime boyfriend on November 11th. It is interesting how she is in some ways bucking the trend of many of her millennial friends who are making conscious choices to not get married.
Meanwhile, within hours our own Hive community will experience its own winds of change as Hardfork26 takes effect, bringing with it assorted updates and changes to the underlying structure of this venue many of us have come to think of as our primary spot for online interaction and engagement.
Hopefully everything will go smoothly.
Personally, I have never been a big fan of change, most likely because my learning curve to adapt to "something different" has been extremely long for as long as I can remember... even as a child.
I typically tend to hang on to the way things are, particularly if they are working moderately well… and was never a big subscriber to the idea of "new and improved" at every turn you encounter.
I recognize that some people need "new" to stay interested in their lives and the world. Just not me. I was the last person in our circle to get a VCR; the last to get a cell phone.
Whereas it may not be a majority opinion, I prefer the idea that the tried and true is in fact tried and true and doesn't need to be fiddled with unless there is overwhelming evidence that changing it would result in a major step forward.
The whole idea of "change for change's sake" just makes me feel anxious and uneasy. And I hate when places like eBay and Etsy — where I make part of our income — makes frequent cosmetic changes that require listing changes and just slows me down. Gack!
Of course change is inevitable, I know that! As the old truism goes" "the only constant in life is change."
Anyway, with that thought I'm going to call it a night. Hopefully tomorrow will see Hive running smoothly.
