I wasn't entirely sure what I was going to write about today... I thought maybe it would be a much overdue "gardening journal" post, but I wasn't happy with my pictures... and it had gotten dark, in the meantime.

Strawberries, blackberries, beans, apples... lots of goodies in the garden!

And then the clock rolled over to midnight, and Mrs. Denmarkguy suddenly showed up to wish me a Happy Birthday!

Yes, it's my birthday. For 62 years, I have been wandering around on our little blue marble in space, trying to make sense of this thing called "existence."

Once I've had a bit of a night's sleep, we will have a quiet day. You see, I was never one of those people who was into big parties and celebrations... in fact, for a large chunk of my life, birthdays were something I'd just as well ignore and forget about.

That was even true when I was a kid.

My memories of the best things about having a birthday was primarily that I would get to choose what we had for dinner... and (for the most part) I would have a day without chores, and without a bunch of people telling me what to do (usually more chores!), at every turn.

In that sense, I did look forward to my birthday! I also looked forward to the fact that I would request that we have my birthday at my auntie's house, rather than at home.

There was a certain freedom to that... which meant my birthday felt like a day of "reprieve," in some way.

Tomato season in finally happening!

It's funny, the things we remember...

My birthday always meant the beginning of blackberry season, to me. To this day, I love a bowl of fresh blackberries with a bit of cream. Most gardeners don't have the patience for blackberries, and they definitely are the prickliest thing out there... but I think well worth it.

My birthday also meant the beginning of chanterelle season in Denmark...

My birthday was more connected to food and gardening, than to parties and presents. Still is!

So, tomorrow — or "later today," as it were — some friends are coming over for a brief early visit, then we shall head to one of our state parks for a quiet walk on the beach and in the woods.

After that, we'll pick up some sushi — one of my favorite eats — on the way home, and then just chill out at the house... doing as little as possible.

That has always been the "luxury" in my life... the opportunity to not do anything!

And now? It is time for some rest!

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your week!
