Corn is one of the staple foods. It is usually present in everyone's diet, most especially Filipinos. It belongs to cereal and starchy food and is a good source of fiber and antioxidants. Our family always loved to eat this crop or cereal since birth. This will be our main source of carbohydrates and other nutrients to provide us with energy. This is usually present in our daily meals since my parents always plant this crop on our farm. If not for my father's cornfield maybe we experienced famine and hunger since both of them had no work. When we were still young, we always helped them in cultivating our farm from weeding to planting and harvesting. That is why I always loved to cultivate a farm. It was because my present work hindered me from cultivating a farm, I stopped farming as of this time.

Last Saturday, during the hive and ocd onboarding orientation at Malingin Elementary School, I passed by a cornfield with flag lets, banners, big balloons, tables, sound, tents, and a temporary stage. A mature yellow corn variety were open but not yet harvested. There were corns harvested already and these were placed inside a sacks but the sacks were open too. Others were hung on tents. The corn hub was already open too. I can even see how healthy it was and how shiny are the corn kernel. That scene made me curious. It was a peculiar event for me since that was the first time I had seen that activity. It was also a coincidence when one of the passengers in the tricycle dropped off near the venue. So I got a chance to interview her as one of the event participants. She said that it was a Corn Derby.

What is Corn Derby

Corn Derby is a program of the Department of Agriculture wherein the participants will showcase their production of corn of different varieties coming from different companies with the application of new techniques of panting corn in areas with different areas of elevations as well as the type of soil. The CORN DEBY at Malingin, Bogo City. Cebu was initiated by the City Agriculture office of Bogo in cooperation with Bayer and Unifeeds and in collaboration with the Local Government Unit of Bogo City. The activity was participated by farmers in Bogo who planted corn in different land elevations. They showcase their production on that day as the final judging.

Insights

I am blessed that I was able to witness this one-of-a-kind activity. Even if I just came across the venue, I was able to gather a little bit of information as to what the program was all about. Unluckily I was not able to congratulate all the participants for successfully joining this program. When I passed by the venue, the program had not yet started. As the daughter of whose parents were farmers, I know how tedious it is to cultivate a farm to have a bountiful harvest. Furthermore, my salute to all the people behind this program namely; the Department of Agriculture, Local Government Units, and other sponsoring agencies like Bayer and Unifeeds. Indeed this will ignite our farmer to cultivate their farm despite our changing climate.
