Tonu has been sitting with the lights off for a long time, she is not condoning any kind of gleam. Even though the bright sun of autumn is outside now, her house is still opaque. They rent two rooms on the third floor of a five-storey building in old Dhaka. Their building is encircled by other people's buildings so it is always dark inside their house even during the day. They have been enduring this darkness for several years because the costing is comparatively low enough pertained to regular rent. She and her eight-year-old younger brother live in one room and their parents in another. Her father works as a manager in a sanitary distribution shop. The salary at the end of the month can not cover anything more than the rent and household expenses. Tonu is continuing her studies and supporting her younger brother's school fees by doing tuition. This time Tonu has appeared Honors examination in Economics from Jagannath University.
It is more difficult to sit for the marriage interview in the marriage call than to sit for the exam in front of the University teachers. Tonu was rejected for the fifth time today. After being opposed every time she sits in a dark room like this for hours. Being rejected by a unknown family every time is really insulting for a girl and her family members. A group of people came from the lad side and analyze a girl from every intersection. Tonu doesn't know why she seems to be completely naked even after wearing all the clothes at that distinct period of time.
The main reason Tanu has been rejected every time is because she looks relatively black. Very few parents prefer ebony girl for their son except love marriage. This is the cruel reality of our country. Today Tonu's mind is a little shocking than the other similar day. They gave Tonu and her family a different indication today. Not only they rejected her but demanded various furniture and cars from his father. If his father could give these to his son as a gift, they would consider Tanu as their son's spouse.
Water is dripping from Tonu’s eyes in thin embarrassment. She hates to think about how people verify the market price of their son as a products in this age of civilization. Tonu doesn't know if it's because of crying for a long time but she is feeling quite relief now. She's not sobbing anymore. It was as if she had unknowingly found herself back. She will finish her studies, establish herself first and then think about marriage. She still doesn't know what to do after graduation, but she knows she can establish herself as a job holder or an entrepreneur. She wants to convey the message to girls like her and create an example that there are many things in life to do than just getting married. She is committed to herself today. She will conquer all the light of the universe with overcoming her dark side and this is the battle she must win.
