iPhones do actually slow down as time goes on and here are the few ways to speed it up -
Sometimes apps don't give up the RAM even when quit which results in slow running iPhone.
Restarting iPhone is the fastest way to force free it from the apps that are using RAM -
For iPhone 6s and below : Press and hold power and home buttons for about 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. RAM will now have been refreshed and your iPhone should be much faster.
For iPhone 7 : Press and hold power button and volume down button for about 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Then you should be back in business.
IOS has a lot of animations that can take up RAM and cause some overall lag and results in battery drain and slow iPhone.

There are number of apps which are constantly refreshing and using location in the background, resulting in some slow down and battery drain.

Go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > Manage Storage and see for yourself how much storage space your Messages app takes up, which slows down your Messages app and iPhone in general.

Unused apps may take up not only storage, but also RAM of your iPhone. Hence, deleting these unused apps could be an effective way to speed up your iPhone.
To free up some memory on your iPhone, try clearing Safari Data and Cookies.
