7 June 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3127: put it in the slot
“So, when you drop the mail – I mean, when you put it in the slot, then what happens? Do the mail fairies come and get it from the post office?”
“Of course they do, Amanda, and post office fairies always wear blue in solidarity with the workers.”
Capt. R.E. Ludlow, Amanda's grandfather, knew she was getting the wrong information from eight-year-old Gracie Trent, but could not bring himself to interrupt this moment between these sweet little girls.
“Because after all, have you ever heard of mail being lost in a plane crash?” Gracie said. “Obviously, it's gotta be fairies because they can fly all weather.”
“I'm so glad because I get worried about stuff,” Amanda said. “Like, I'm getting ready to write some people whose lives may be in danger and I gotta make sure they get the letter.”
Amanda lowered her voice.
“You know that Lofton County just did its first virtual fashion show, and it was not good and Edwina is going to kill, right?”
Capt. Ludlow did an about-face, marched double-time to his bedroom, and put his head in three pillows on his bed so that his immense basso laughter would not be heard quite so loudly …
Mrs. Thalia Ludlow went to see what was going on, complete with noting the laughter coming from the Trent house and the complete oblivion of the two little girls talking about Amanda's eight-year-old sister and fashionista warrior princess, Edwina. She then went to her own bedroom where her husband was lying on the bed rolling with laughter.
“So, Tinkerbell and company didn't have enough to do, but they have to deliver mail and prepare people for the wrath of Edwina 'Breaking Bad' Ludlow over some glitchy Zoom efforts at fashion,” she said, and the captain rolled all the way off the bed.
