18 June 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3138: summer
Not everyone in the Ludlow and Trent houses were paying attention to the trunk being cut loose from the tree root ball that it had come up from the ground in.
“So, if the Covid thingy means we can't go back to school, Grandma, does that mean summer never ends?”
Seven-year-old Amanda Ludlow had questions, and Mrs. Thalia Ludlow had answers.
“No, because summer is about the weather, Amanda – it is September, and the tilt of the earth is coming back toward the south, so fall will be here soon so that the southern half of the world can have spring and summer next.”
“Oh, it's a fairness thing,” Amanda said. “God is better than I thought!”
“Right, because everyone who lives toward the ends of the earth gets all four seasons, and everyone who lives in the middle can be in tropical summer all year – but we're not that close to the middle, so we get seasons,” Mrs. Ludlow said.
“This is good, because, I like lemonade, but I also like hot chocolate and snow, and I want other people to get them too,” Amanda said. “I like summer, but I also like fall and winter and spring.”
“And God's grace covers them all, so even with the Covid thingy, fall and winter and spring will come again because He promised they would,” Mrs. Ludlow said.
“I feel safe now,” Amanda said.
“Want some lemonade?” Mrs. Ludlow said.
“Yes, please, and thank you,” Amanda said. “Snuggles with air conditioning and lemonade are the nicest thing about summer.”
