“Well, yes, I am a vegetarian, but that just sounds like too much.”

“It is too much – I like carrots, but no!”

Seven-year-old Amanda and her nine-year-old brother George Ludlow were talking with their friend eleven-year-old Velma Trent about something she had read.

“Well, it's just a book, and a carrot eating contest really is a thing for rabbits,” Velma said as she set out paper plates and the two younger children followed her with napkins and plastic utensils. “But, if you think about it, a rabbit is kinda small, so, we probably could beat a rabbit in a contest like that, but why would we want to?”

“Well, it's healthier than a hot dog eating contest,” George said. “I've been looking up what's in some of those things, and it's not good! At least everything in a carrot is pronounceable!”

“Yeah, because all that's in carrot is carrot,” Amanda said.

“Store-bought processed food is an adventure,” Velma said. “Dad is always saying that he only buys sausages where he sees where they make the sausages, and the good thing about Lofton County is that a lot of food creators aren't afraid to do it right in front of you.”

“Yeah, we definitely are a quiet foodie spot,” George said. “Lots of stuff being made from scratch, lots of old methods of working with food here.”

“We have been having so much fun going to farmer's markets and Fruitland and getting stuff to dry, can, and make jam out of!” Amanda said. “Grandma likes the picking of it, and Papa likes the process!”

“Not that it lasts long because there's ten of us,” George said. “I mean, we basically make stuff like that for variety, but, dried fruit is basically gone in a week. I'm just trying to work out where the plum part in the prune ingredients is.”

“One of the scientific names for plums – I think for what is called its genus – is Prunus,” Velma said, “and I think peaches and cherries and even almonds are in there too.”

“You know, I wondered about that because when a peach pit opens, there's a little almond-looking thing in there,” Amanda said. “They must be cousins or something.”

“Yeah, but are they cousin-siblings like us and Glendella and Robert and Edwina and Eleanor, or like Papa and Glendella's grandfather Astor?” George said.

“Well, given that peach pits contain cyanide and if you eat too many you can die, it might be the second one,” Velma said.

“Yep,” Amanda and George said together.

“Glendella's Grumps did find out: mess with Papa and what he is doing for us, and you might be better off in a peach pit eating contest,” George said.

“I just felt so bad for him, getting laughed off the piano like that, because any time you mess with somebody who can laugh you lower than that last note on the piano, you're basically doomed,” Amanda said.

“Basically,” Velma said. “I mean, if people would just eat peaches and learn how to leave the pits and also other people alone, the world would be a safer place.”

“Yep,” Amanda and George said.
