“I feel like the good thing about Robert, Edwina, and George is that you never have to wonder what is going on with them, no matter how crazy it is, and I feel that some politicians are like that – completely unhinged, but, at least you know.”

Ten-year-old Glendella Ludlow was talking politics and siblings with fellow ten-year-old Andrew Ludlow, her cousin and adoptive brother.

“Yeah, I feel like Grayson would actually be the scariest type of politician even as a good one,” Andrew said, “because he would have been one of those ones that whatever he said he was going to do, it would be like 90 percent done and your head would kinda explode when you saw how fast it happens.”

“But he would never be a politician: that's a statesman,” Glendella said. “You and Grayson both would be statesmen, because y'all do not lie and whatever y'all say, y'all do, and the everyday people would love y'all if they had sense enough to elect y'all.”

“Yeah, there are not many statesmen in Lofton County, or stateswomen either,” Andrew said. “I think that people go for loudness and excitement, and sometimes that gets us in trouble. We also love a story that lets us feel like people know what we are going through, but sometimes that becomes a little much. Just because you know what I'm going through doesn't mean you know how to fix the problem. Like, you and I understand bad parenting, but we couldn't get each other out. That took God and Papa and Grandma.”

“You know,” Glendella said, “Bad Grandma loved her talk shows, and one of her local favorites was 'Spill Your Guts!' People way too old doing way too much and saying way too much about it, and some of them kept coming on but the situations were never getting better. But then when you think about it, how well are you going to get with your guts outside of your body?”

“Yeah, that's called a prolapse, and nothing good happens after that,” Andrew said. “Again: you need help to fix that one up and I know because while I was with my good foster parents, Good Foster Great Uncle – oh, yeah, you gotta meet all of the Red Clouds at least on Zoom – had a prolapse and Good Foster Dad said he saw it and was telling Good Foster Mom while I was doing quality eavesdropping. No, you do not want to ever have any part of your guts coming out. That's a bad idea.”

“Which brings us back to politicians versus statesfolks,” Glendella said. “Some politicians are just prolapsing their willingness to do anything to be elected out of their mouth, and then there are those statesfolks who get things done.”

“That makes so much sense, actually,” Andrew said. “That explains a lot of things. You know who we need to call later on?”

“Who?” Glendella said.

“Let's call Cousin Donald, who is not a politician, but ended up being the mayor of Big Loft and has turned into a statesman,” Andrew said. “Now that is an interesting older cousin right there, and he gets stuff done.”

“I'm so glad my new family makes sense,” Glendella said. “I don't miss the daily talk shows and the drama at all.”
