The Philippines was colonized by Spain for more than 300 years. More than three centuries. That long. And after that, two more countries invaded it. Then, a very long time had passed before Philippines finally got its freedom. Getting it is not easy and that's an understatement. Blood spilled. Lives lost. Unhealed wounds. Tears dried. Soiled clothes. Despite all that, Filipinos persisted. For centuries, they fought and waited and fought.
It's beautiful - the strong desire and hunger of the colonized to be free. To get out from the grasp of its captors. That is human nature. You can't just let yourself be ruled by an outsider. But the desire to be free from the captors is not just about colonized countries. It is also about captured souls tangled in broken dreams.
As a human, you crave to get out from what's keeping you. You crave for freedom even from the trivial things like getting stuck in a traffic jam or being forced to wear a dress you are not comfortable with. You feel suppressed when you can't cry out loud because they can hear you. And when they hear you, they would think that you're crazy. Then, you begin to realize that you are indeed crazy if that means drastic change of mood from being ecstatic one minute and lifeless the next. You want freedom from all the noise. Of people and of your heart.
This is for those who feel trapped, who think the walls will swallow them anytime. It is for beautiful creatures who walk under the sun but do not know how it feels to be showered with sunlight. It is for those who are forced to run with their eyes covered and hands tied at their backs. It is for you. You who are imprisoned by the thorns and vines of society and your jumbled thoughts. This is for everyone who doesn't know what freedom is or what it feels like. This is for each person who thinks they deserve less.
You deserve to be free. You deserve to spin around open air and reach for the dazzling lights in the sky. You deserve to swing inside the green forests and lie down on the waters. Without restrictions. Without voices telling you what to do. Freedom is the ability to explore mountains and alleys without whips and chains. Freedom is believing that fate is not the sole manipulator of your then, now and future. Freedom is choice.
You can be jailed but then you can make your prison a paradise. Or you can choose to escape by all means.
