the trees are dancing
in this wind
tonight
Moon at Magome by Kawase Hasui
The kids had gone to sleep. It was late and I also needed to go to sleep. But I was delaying and staring out the window, watching the night. It was pretty windy outside and I was watching, but watching blankly, not really seeing and just letting the quiet of the night soak into me. Then I noticed a few trees over in the park across the way. The wind was making it look as if they were dancing. Maybe they really were. I watched for awhile, then went and wrote down the above haiku.
Another that came to mind yesterday as I picked the above out of my notecard box:
friend trees
may I join
your dance?
(Yes, notecard box. I almost always have notecards around and make a habit of writing haiku on them, which I try to do everyday. Notecards are similar to the typical strips of paper haiku poets of old in Japan used to use (短冊, tanzaku). Then I file the cards away in a notecard box. I have several at this point. I should maybe upgrade to an old card catalog set of drawers...)
