When Wez saw the man’s reflection and heard that melody, he immediately left the cabin, which had struck him as strange because of everything he’d seen there. By the time he stepped outside, it was already night, and everything was silent, but in his mind he still had the memory of those five golden lights—especially the one that had gone out after the voice had revealed to him that he would have to recover what each musician had chosen to forget.
As he walked on, Wez looked at the sheet music again and saw that the notes had changed; it no longer showed a melody, but rather a sort of path. He also discovered that among the trees were several stone structures and a small door that was visible from a distance, though it was covered by branches. As he got closer, he realized that this door had the same shape as the one he’d seen in the photograph. He took out the key and hesitated for a moment, because the voice had said that the key wasn’t meant to open a door, but rather a memory. Nevertheless, Wez persisted, and the door opened on its own.
On the other side, there wasn’t a room, but rather a street in Elaris, where Wez found himself back in the city just as it had been many years ago—everything was so joyful, with musicians and a city full of memories. But he was surprised, because there in that city was the very same man from the photographs—the man who ran the Elaris theater—and he was holding the silver key in his hands. Wez began to follow him, but every time he got close, the man would appear in a new place—first entering the theater, then sitting at the piano, and then surrounded by four other musicians, making a total of five people.
Wez realized that this person wasn’t alone—they were the five musicians who had tried to keep Elaris’s memory alive. But what was strange was when the five musicians gathered in the square, and next to them was a small wooden box. The first musician opened it and took out a photograph. Wez managed to catch a glimpse of it—it was a little girl playing the piano. At that moment, he heard that voice again: “That was the memory you decided to forget.” Wez didn’t understand, yet that was the person who had taught him to play.
The musicians were still gathered there, where he dropped the photograph onto the table, and behind him a shadow began to approach—a place where shadows didn’t need to destroy memories, they just needed to convince people that it was better to forget them. But everything changed when the girl in the photograph appeared in front of Wez. She didn’t say anything; she was just holding a sheet of music. The good news was that Wez managed to recognize the first notes of that melody and said, “So this was the first melody”—but before he could ask her anything else, everything began to fade away.
The last thing the girl said was, “He didn’t forget the music; he forgot why he started playing it.” Wez felt a chill, but there was a key on the floor; he picked it up and saw that it had a new mark on it—the first symbol. Wez realized he had found the first lost memory, but he still had to find the first musician. He returned to the street where he had entered and noticed a piano with someone sitting there—who turned out to be the first musician. His face was exactly like the one in the photographs, and the man said, “You’ve come too late,” and began playing immediately. The melody made all of Elaris tremble once more, and for the first time, Wez heard the true beginning of the song that could bring the city back to life.
