The world is full of people with an incredible ability to think, to create, and even to play with the minds of others—without anyone even realizing it—and this has led many directors to draw inspiration from it, creating films that leave us pondering. That’s why Unabomber is here—a story that weaves together various time periods and a single investigation, making every second much harder to grasp. We’ll also see a man who went from being a top student to becoming one of the most wanted criminals in the United States, making the film thrilling and full of pivotal decisions, while also showing that the world is surely full of people like him.
This is a very slow-paced film, since beyond showing action, it aims to help us discover the person behind a simple name—which is deeply troubling, as it leads us to ask: Why go from a peaceful life to a violent one? How much influence can people’s words really have? Why does an idea turn into something harmful? And many other questions that make the film a real puzzle, just as the years go by and the investigation continues to expand without ever reaching a resolution.
By spanning several years, the film builds intense tension, as the viewer gradually uncovers the story; we also see how loneliness, pressure, and an increasingly extreme worldview come to occupy a central place in his life. Consequently, the main character really stands out here as a highly complex and unsettling role, while the great actor Russell Crowe is there to lend it even more weight with his psychological depth, successfully driving the entire criminal investigation while revealing the character’s contradictions, obsessions, and the way he ends up trapped by his own convictions.
Each scene is set in a different year, which keeps the viewer’s curiosity piqued—a major strength of this type of film—while the psychological elements, the crime thriller aspects, and certain ideas are explored in great detail and can be truly terrifying. But beyond all that, the film highlights a reality: a person can be very intelligent and develop a deeply destructive view of the world, but knowledge does not guarantee empathy, and having arguments to defend an idea does not mean that idea is morally acceptable.
This film is based on real events; it’s a psychological thriller that reveals the hidden side of people, which is why every second of it is so compelling and leaves viewers questioning what they’ve seen. In the end, it shows how a man can become trapped by his own thoughts, but it also reminds us that no psychological explanation can erase responsibility for the acts committed. So if you’re looking for something different—a combination of the protagonist’s psychology, the investigation, and the human consequences of his crimes—this is the movie for you.
