Sports movies are the kind of stories worth watching over and over again, since from start to finish they’re packed with powerful messages that apply to everyone—and above all, they remind us that it’s always worth fighting for what we want. That’s why Karateka (2026) is here—the director aims to craft a story packed with action, motivation, and drama, while also highlighting, beyond the realm of sports, the resilience and perseverance needed to succeed in life and to prove that, no matter what others say, what truly matters is staying fully focused.

This film is inspired by the life of Sandra Sánchez, one of the great figures of Spanish karate. It manages to showcase a bit of her entire journey to the top—a path marked by sacrifice, perseverance, and the ability to keep moving forward. It’s a beautiful story, as it serves as an inspiration and helps us realize that we are all capable, leading us to ask: “Will she be able to do it?” “Will she be able to make her country proud?” And many other elements that make the film work and invite us to understand that behind every medalist there are always doubts, fears, sacrifices, and everything she had to leave behind to achieve her goals.

One of the special things about the film is each individual scene, since every setting they’re in is part of her journey as an athlete, creating a connection between Sandra and her surroundings. This highlights how important the people who are also part of that process are, because it remains a team effort. Furthermore, the film showcases each training location and the movements involved, allowing viewers to learn a bit more about karate—a discipline that extends both on and off the tatami—and the pursuit of excellence. This results in a valuable sports film that draws viewers in, making them connect with every second of the movie.

I really liked the outcome of this movie, Karateka, since it’s a great sports film that shows how some people are born to be great athletes—and, above all, to represent their country—thereby highlighting that dreams don’t have an expiration date. That’s why it’s a film with a powerful message: no matter how many times people tell you it’s too late, the important thing is to never stop believing in your potential—especially when you’re passionate about something. It also reminds us that behind every triumph lies a struggle we almost never see.
