Science fiction movies always have something that hooks the viewer while also allowing us to discover just how far people are capable of going. That’s why Hope was released—a film that combines science fiction, horror, action, and dark humor, starting with a normal day and escalating into something much bigger than we could have imagined. It might even be something you’ve never seen before in a movie of this genre.
The story takes us to a town near the border with North Korea where a threat endangers all the residents, ensuring that every second of the film builds suspense, as it is filled with clues, silence, and places that are all in ruins. Here, knowing that anything can happen, that sense of danger escalates and turns into a disaster, making the action scenes even more spectacular and causing the narrative to shift between horror and comedic moments.
With so many elements, the film can reach a point where it falters, which ultimately affects its pacing—despite having interesting ideas that aren’t fully developed. Furthermore, the characters help inject some emotion through their distinct personalities and, above all, the way they deal with the entire situation—which, after all, is something that shouldn’t be happening—creating a contrast that can either work very well or completely pull the viewer out of the experience. Yet one question remains: Is there something more behind the monsters? Could they reach other parts of the world?
That’s why it’s yet another science fiction film that dares to experiment and mix things up without following too many rules, thereby keeping viewers on edge every single second. That’s why Hope is an uneven experience that still has more to offer; yet it has personality, powerful imagery, and plenty of ideas—and perhaps that’s its greatest strength: beyond the monsters, the chases, and the chaos, it manages to remind us that fear doesn’t always stem from what we don’t know, but also from what we’re willing to do when we feel our survival is at stake.
