Yes, an entertaining fire. Have you ever just stared into the fire in the fireplace? I do find myself doing that. You know how some people fall asleep at the TV? Well, I find myself falling asleep at the fireplace fire.
Of course to get here I would have to go back about 2 years ago. What? Yes, for me to enjoy my fireplace fire today I would have had to plan it about 2 years before.
You see, that is why I have to either look for people with wood in front of their yard with a sign that says, Free Wood. Then if I do see that I have to plan to get there with my 91 Chevy S10 pickup.
Yes, the wood is free as the people probably just like to use their furnace instead of burning wood. As for me when I bought my used 91 Chevy S10 pickup is the same time that my pilot light in my furnace was last lit.
I bought the pickup back in 2014 and that is the last time my furnace was lit. After that I would use the pickup to load free wood from where ever the free wood was that I was willing to drive to. I don't mind going to near by towns, but I don't want to go farther than that.
So yes, I do look for wood in front of the house with the sign free wood. I have picked up wood around my neighborhood that way.
The other way to find free firewood is to look into the Craigslist Free ad section. From there I will look for people trying to get rid of firewood. There is always someone trying to get rid of firewood.
Then once I get the wood I still have to take it home and unload it to a place that it would be stored until it is time to split.
This is were a piece of wood is put on a chopping block, then with great care bring down the maul into the wood to make it split. Sometimes one may have to bring the maul upon it until there is a crack. once that happens then it would be weakened enough to split all the way through.
When the wood is split, I usually stack them on pallets a certain way. Like this.
Then when the wood is all stacked, I just wait until about 2 years after the tree it came from was cut down.
Another thing for me to keep in mind is to always have a flow of wood as I would always have wood that is being in the process of being seasoned.
So I will also always be looking for wood that people are trying to get rid of and after all those things that have to be done, getting the wood, unloading, splitting and stacking and storage. Then after all that after a period of about 2 years after the tree was cut down, do I enjoy my fireplace fire.
