The Academy Awards celebrate the best of films throughout the year. The Razzies, in contrast, roast the worst. Zack Snyder's Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Dinesh D'Souza's Hillary's America dominated the nominations and rightfully so.
Worst Picture
Thoughts: Of the nominees for Worst Picture, Batman vs. Superman and Hillary's America are the only two that I bothered to watch and their nominations were earned, I assure you. Hillary's America was a film that was definitely out to push an agenda. While I didn't hate the way it was put together, I could have lived without the 'Murican slant of it.
Worst Actor
Thoughts: You know if one film can have two nominations in the same category, there is probably something to be said about giving one of them the actual award. For the record, that winner should have been Henry Cavill (Ben Affleck killed it...so to speak...as Batman). What is particularly baffling to me, was that 1) someone not being an actor could get a worst actor nomination? and 2) how someone can get a worst actor nomination for playing HIMSELF?
Worst Actress
Thoughts: Was Becky Turner's body language REALLY worse than Megan Fox's acting?
Worst Supporting Actress
Thoughts: I have not had the misfortune of watching any of these films, but from what I have heard about Zoolander No. 2 I am in no way surprised by this.
Worst Supporting Actor
Thoughts: 1000% agree with this. Eisenberg's performance as well as the overall concept of the DCEU's Lex Luthor was straight trash.
Worst Screen Combo
Thoughts: Given the contempt that was used to nominate the other duos, how did Battfleck and Superman win?
Worst Director
Thoughts: Obviously this film was slanted and just felt like a propaganda piece. There really isn't much that I can say about this film that I haven't said already.
Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel
Thoughts: The DCEU has essentially tried to catch up to 8 years of Marvel films with essentially 2 movies. So a lot of what happened in this movie was actively shoehorned in and had to be skipped over. This was just really unfortunate in this regard. Even worse, I don't think DC can slow down at this point.
Worst Screenplay
Thoughts: One word: Martha.
Dinesh has gone as far as to say these nominations were "petty revenge" since Donald Trump, whom Dinesh supported, won the Presidential Election. I would only apply that to a couple of nominations (see acting nominations above), but would not say this about all five. In my opinion, Dinesh should just hold these Ls in his chest and move on. The good news though, is that this doesn't seem to have stopped him from making films so we can only hope he has something planned for the future. As far as the DCEU goes, they should just focus on good storytelling as opposed to trying to be Exposition Man.
All of that being said, every year will have bad films and when the Razzie nominations come out next year, I will gladly talk about (and laugh at) them.
