I have mentioned already, nearly every time generative AI comes up, how I feel about it. I care about the results – using generative AI is not an automatic dealbreaker for me to enjoy a game or product. I know for a lot of people, that is not the case though which is why I point out whenever I know generative AI was used. I know there are a lot of fans of the Dizzy franchise, especially in Europe, and with that, I am sure some portions are against generative AI and that today may be the time fans separate from future Oliver Twins works.

Send in Generative AI

Time Extension attended a an event that featured a panel talk with the Oliver Twins on their current projects (a board game, a new Dizzy game, etc) and their careers.

It seems the Oliver Twins are going all in on generative AI while expanding their limited resources to other categories. To most people this would be called over extending your capabilities but with generative AI, is that even a thing anymore? Their board game, based on the Wizard of Oz and called Journey to Emerald City, is heavily landlocked in the generative AI camp. Journey to Emerald City is coming to Kickstarter at some point.

I don’t see any amount of backlash over generative AI stopping the twins from continuing down this road. They are not alone though. Even Lord British himself is researching generative AI use in future releases.

The next Dizzy game, coming to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, will use generative AI.

Where Do You Stand?

As I said already, I only care about the result. I don’t care what tools were used in the creation of whatever I am enjoying. I grew up through the growing use of CGI in movies from Tron onward and remember quite well the way early use was criticized (and how Tron was literally blocked from various awards ceremonies as it was not considered a “movie” or other derogatory reference).

I am a huge fan of practical effects myself but can easily admit A LOT of movies would not exist without CGI. Does that mean those movies should not exist? Are you ready to deny franchises such as The Matrix (arguably the title that pushed DVD player sales early on). Should pretty much anything Disney for the last 20+ years be destroyed/disavowed for their use of CGI?

Of course not.

To me, generative AI is going through that now. Let me know your stance in the comments below.
