I want to increase my intake of "superfoods", namely by eating more fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamins and antioxidants. (I use to eat these foods more regularly while in Hawaii, and I want to get back into the habit)
These type of foods are known to improve the immune system and to fight cancer if eaten regularly. And of course, I don't have to explain why this is a good thing.
Anyway, here are some tips I've used to try and introduce these super foods into my own personal diet.
BLUEBERRIES
To me, they don't taste all that sweet, but sometimes young blueberries can be a little tart . What I do is drop them into my whole grain cereal in the morning to make it a little more healthier for me. I avoid high-sugar/artificially colored cereals.
Acts as an anti-inflammatory, improves brain function, reduces the risks of cancer, reduces cholesterol and improves heart function, has anti-aging benefits, and much more.
POMEGRANATES
I rarely buy these. But I sometimes will buy a organic pomegranate juice, which I find easy to drink. Just make sure that the juice is organic, so you know you are getting real fruit juice and not just fruit flavoring.
Acts as a remedy for treating diarrhea, excessive perspiring, fevers, sore throats, and as an astringent.
ONIONS
This one is probably the easiest vegetable to eat -- cooked, not raw. I eat onions with almost anything. And I add it to ramen. I'm sure eating fresh onions (instead of boiled or fried onions) will give you more nutrients, but typically the taste is just too strong. Also, garlic and leeks (both in the onion family) are also good for you.
Used for thousands of years as a disinfectant, as a diuretic, anti-emetic, stimulant, expectorant, and even to fight colds.
BROCCOLI
Yes!! I looooove Broccoli. I will eat it as often as possible and I always order it if I see it on a menu. I love eating it with potatoes or with cheese on top. It goes great as a side dish with almost anything. But they say that to get the most nutrients out of Broccoli you should eat it raw, but I still have a hard time doing that. I need to work on that.
Helps prevent prostate cancer, reduces blood pressure, contains anti-aging properties and much more.
CRANBERRIES
This is another vegetable that I can't really eat by itself. To me, cranberries are just too bitter. But I try to buy organic cranberry juice mixed with some other organic fruit juice and drink it that way. I know that cranberries does a lot of good for your blood and kidneys.
Helps prevent cancer, are a tremendous source of antioxidants for enhanced immune function, they help digestion, the urinary tract, are heart-healthy, posses anti-aging properties and more.
Also, one last (sometimes overlooked) fruit that is not mentioned in this list, is Apples. Apples are fantastic. (vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, fiber) When I used to eat 3/4 (organic) apples every week I hardly ever got sick. But when it comes to Apples most of the vitamins are in the skin, so you should eat them unpeeled.
Well, that's all the tips I have. Lets all stay healthy!!
