After coming back from Norfolk, I really wanted to visit Whitby, one of my favourite places and I'd not been there since last October, so I was itching to get back, however I got a lovely surprise when I got home.
I took my parents on holiday, they are in their 70's now and not as mobile as they used to be, but I told my girlfriend that when I got home, I would take her to Whitby for the day, however, while I was there, she went and booked a nights stay there, which was fantastic, I love walking through the old cobbled streets at night, hearing the bells ring on the many churches that Whitby has.
We arrived there and it was raining and very windy, although it does get busy there but due to the weather there was very few people, which was brilliant, it felt like we'd got the entire place to ourselves, and I had to walk down the pier while the waves splash the pier walls, not dangerous though as you walk along the top platform and the waves are well below.
We had a good walk around, went for coffee in our favourite cafe called Sherlocks, it's brilliant in there and has been decorated in a wartime theme, and the coffee is fantastic in there lol. Highly recommended if you visit Whitby.
We checked in to the hotel and went out for tea etc, although we were in bed by 10pm as we wanted to get up and watch the sunrise. We woke up before the alarm and was out of the hotel by 5.45, sunsrise was around 6.30am so it gave us time to get where we was going.
It wasn't the most spectacular sunrise, although I still think sunrises are special, it's fantastic to see the first light of the day hit the land and illuminate the clouds etc.
I am happy with what I got at sunrise but what I really wanted was to get the drone up, checking my weather app it said it was ok to fly and the wind was only at 20mph, it felt so much stronger though and I was in two minds whether to take the drone up or not, I decided to chance it, the drone was really fighting to hold position, so I landed it straight away, I felt a bit gutted as there was a shot I really wanted to get (and still do).
We returned to the hotel about 7ish and I nodded off for 10 minutes, then went for breakfast, after we came out, the wind had gone, which was really surprising with how strong it was, so I drove up to Whitby Abbey and took the drone up there as there was some other shots I wanted to get, and still theres some more I didn't get, so it's an excuse to go back again ;-)
I really loved the shots I got with the drone, especially the one of the famous 199 Steps, looking down on them really gives a whole new perspective on them, you can see the cobble streets that run through the old town on the east side of Whitby.
Due to the warm weather, the town was absolutely rammed by 10.30am, it has become quite a popular place to visit, which kind of ruins it's quaintness too. Looking forward to going back and a sunny winters days, that's when I like Whitby the best.
