I came to Sterling Point through the wrong hook, and it was the best thing that could have happened to me. Several people from the LGBT community recommended it to me because of a relationship between two girls that, according to all of them, was gorgeous. And yes, it is beautiful, but the series doesn't revolve around that at all. I sat down to watch one thing, found another, and it had been a very long time since a series hooked me like this.

How normal normal should be

This is what won me over the most. LGBT life is simply there as one more part of the characters' everyday lives. Nobody turns it into the big issue, nobody adds dramatic music or gives it extra weight over the other relationships. It's one more love story among many, treated as naturally as any other. It should be like this everywhere, because it is that normal, and it left me with a strange mix of joy and anger at how rare it still is to see it on screen. I went for one relationship and stayed for everything else, which is exactly what they wanted.

Visuales y sonido

Visuals and sound

The series is gorgeous to look at. The lake, the nature, the colors, everything is handled with a care you can feel in every shot, and several times I paused just to stare at the landscape. The soundtrack also kept me very happy. It accompanies without taking over, and there are scenes where the music does half of the emotional work.

Characters with real flaws

They are all very particular and very different from each other, and they all feel human. They make mistakes, say what they shouldn't, do things that make you want to yell at the screen. Nobody is chasing perfection and I'm enormously grateful for that, because I'm tired of teenage characters who look like they came out of a catalog of good decisions.

The sisters

The relationship between Annie and Ramona is the best thing about the series for me. They didn't know each other, they didn't grow up together, and biology doesn't connect them in the usual way, because Annie is the adopted daughter of Ramona's mother. You'd think that without shared blood or a shared childhood there can be no sisterhood, but they have a mother in common, and that thread, however thin, binds them. Watching them get closer, distrustful at first, feeling each other out, and how in the end they become something that can't be undone, was beautiful to me. That slow construction is the backbone of the series, and they do it very well.

Amistades y romances

Friendships and romances

The romantic relationships were very sweet, but the friendships were beautiful. There's a warmth among the kids in the group that feels real, the kind of summer friendships that go from zero to everything in two weeks. If you ask me what I remember when I think of the series, it isn't the kisses, it's those scenes of people sitting on a dock doing nothing important.

The adults, let's not even go there

Here comes my complaint. The adults left a lot to be desired. The young ones do much better than they do in drama and in plot, and the older ones spend the series being irresponsible and making mistake after mistake, the kind that cost other people dearly. I was furious while watching, and then I thought it over. The more years you carry, the more weight you carry with them, and it's quite human for that weight to make you stumble. Still, the kids were left to pick up what the grown-ups scattered, and I find that hard to forgive.

The twist and the ending

I won't drop spoilers, but I loved the plot twist. The series starts with something that seems simple and keeps changing its skin without you noticing until there's no going back. The open ending I liked even more, because it means there's more story to tell. And the news is that it's already confirmed, Prime Video renewed the series for a second season on August 20. I needed that season 2 the way you need water, and now I just have to wait for someone to give me a date.
